During his life, Belafonte was also an international human rights activist. In the 1950s and '60s, he was active in the United States Civil Right Movement, being a close confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., while his final album "Paradise in Gazankulu" (1988) was a protest album against the South African Apartheid regime.
