Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Belafonte, Jr., March 1, 1927 – April 25, 2023) was a musician, actor, and social activist. He was born of Jamaican ancestry in New York City and is often dubbed the "King of Calypso" for popularizing the Caribbean musical style in the 1950s. Arguably Belafonte's biggest hit was "Day- O (The Banana Boat Song)." Although first recorded in 1956, the song has been featured in numerous films and television series over the decades including "The Muppet Show" (1979), "Beetlejuice" (1988), and "The Amazing Race" (2020). He passed away on April 25, 2023 at the age of 96 from congestive heart failure. During his life, Belafonte was also an international human rights activist.In the 1950s and '60s, he was active in the United States Civil Right Movement, being a close confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., while his final album "Paradise in Gazankulu" (1988) was a protest album against the South African Apartheid regime.
