When the Savage Arena first opened in 1976, it was called Centennial Hall. In 1988, the arena was renamed John F. Savage Hall in honor of John F. Savage, a University of Toledo (UT) alumni who co-founded the University of Toledo Corporation and contributed greatly to UT athletics. The venue was renamed a second time in 2008 to Savage Arena.
