El nombre "1280 Almas" fue tomado de la novela Pop 1280, del autor norteamericano Jim Thompson. El grupo fue fundado en 1992 por Fernando del Castillo, Pablo Kalmanovitz, Leonardo López, Juan Carlos Rojas, Hernando Sierra y Andrés Vargas.
