Lionel Hampton was a lugubrious and expansive man in nature and performance. His own techniques and abilities were expansive and legendary, if verbose, and his willingness to experiment and mix up personnel in his groups led to a very rich vein of recordings. One of the original, in all meanings of the word, Jazz Masters. His music will last for ever.
