Wonderful concert of Rachmaninoff's 4 concerto and Rhapsody. Wang continues to please me with her wonderful sound gestures, really making a difference between loud and soft and coaxing a delicate sound from the keyboard.
On the other hand she sometimes bangs. Instead of a controlled forte she'll take her arm and wham it down on the keys . I guess to her it's loud, but to me it's an ugly sound.
Perhaps it's also to compensate for the lack of power. Yannick leading the Philadelphia Orchestra consistently overpowered her when the full orchestra was playing. I don't think it's entirely his fault. The piano at the end of the 3rd concerto was 95% inaudible - you couldn't even hear the percussion of the hammers hitting the strings.
Both Yannick and Yuja generally selected fast tempi. It can be exciting, but it also means that one can miss the details.
There was a costume change before each work - a variety of sequins.
I've yet to hear her in music that can test her musicality, showing her phrasing and depth of understanding. But she definitely has stellar technique.
