A New York City native, Sylvana Joyce was raised by a single immigrant mother who exposed her to all kinds of experiences from an early age. Shortly after her mother enrolled her in piano lessons, 5-year-old Sylvana began to write her first songs. She grew up listening to opera, classical music, and Romanian folk music, some of which were composed by her late grandfather (a well-known songwriter in Romania).
