Heute ist er vorrangig als Schriftsteller bekannt. Nachdem er mit humorvollen Kolumnen in der Berliner Underground-Zeitschrift Ich und mein Staubsauger in kleinem Kreis Aufmerksamkeit erregte, engagierte ihn das Satire-Magazin Titanic. Hier veröffentlichte er zwischen 1989 und 1998 108 Kolumnen unter den Titeln Aus Onkel Max’ Kulturtagebuch, Diese Kolumne hat vorübergehend keinen Namen, Manfred Meyer berichtet aus Stuttgart und Informationen für Erwachsene.
