Mara was born to a British father and a Chinese mother in a rural village in Hong Kong, She spent her early years playing the piano and obsessively listening to a glorious combination of Pavarotti and Elvis. In between traveling to South Korea for the Choir Olympics and performing at the Hong Kong Convention Center as a teenager, she sang at local churches every weekend.
