Led Zeppelin did NOT play at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on August 31, 1971. They played at the Orlando Sports Stadium, later known as the Eddie Graham Sports Complex. It was demolished in 1995. This was Led Zeppelin’s only concert appearance in Orlando. The Tangerine Bowl later became the Citrus Bowl and as of 2023 is known as Camping World Stadium. Led Zeppelin never played there.
I saw them in 1970 at the Spectrum, in Philadelphia
I don't know if this is allowed, but here is a review... A crowd of 70,000 paid between $10-$12 apiece for the opportunity to see Led Zeppelin, arguably the world’s biggest rock band at the time, perform at the open-air Tampa Stadium. The gates had opened around noon, and, so far, there had been no major incidents. The enormous mass of fans eagerly anticipated the guitar wizardry of Jimmy Page, the wailing vocal of Robert Plant, and the inevitable Bonzo drum solo. The band took the stage at about 8:15. However, anyone that has lived in Tampa will tell you: rain is unavoidable in the summer months Eleven minutes after the show began, it started to rain. The band, fearing what might happen to their electrical equipment in the thunderstorm, left the stage. The storm passed shortly after it started, but Led Zeppelin did not return to the stage. When an announcement was made that the band would not be coming back, angry concert goers on the field stormed the stage. The police guarding the stage were not prepared for the onslaught of 4000 angry rock fans.Eventually, other officers were called in with tear gas to break up the mob. There are conflicting opinions about whether the use of such tactics was justifiable, or if the incident could truly be labeled a riot. In the end, thirty-five fans and nine police officers were treated for injuries and twenty arrests were made.
Fans were assured that there would be a “raincheck” concert, and that the incident would not affect future shows at Tampa Stadium. Both of these statements turned out to be false. Led Zeppelin never returned to Tampa, and there were no more concerts at Tampa Stadium
Actually the concert was one day, not 3 times... and it was a mess! So disappointing! An ominous rain cloud over head, So much rain. A lot of lightning and loud thunder! flooding the interior of the stadium. it was hard to get out of there pushing and shoving! It got violent, even some friends of ours were badly hear, on was stabbed in the neck. There was no reason for the violence.. I can't believe people were expecting the group to play during a bad storm like that!
I remember Led Zeppelin played in Mobile, Alabama in either 1973 or 74, don't see it listed here.
Led Zeppelin is a classic rock band that drew musical inspiration from a variety of existing genres including American folk, Celtic folk, blues, and more. They are often referred to as one of the forerunners of metal and hard rock music as well as one of the first bands to embrace and influence stadium performances and concept albums.
The founding, core members of Led Zeppelin were:
Led Zeppelin was formed in London, England.
The four members of what would become “Led Zeppelin” first performed together in August 1968 in the basement of a London record store. Soon thereafter, the band toured as the “New Yardbirds” throughout Scandinavia.
After the band’s Scandinavian tour, they were issued a cease and desist by Chris Dreja of the original “Yardbirds” to stop using the name “New Yardbirds.” Page played guitar with the Yardbirds several years earlier and had been given permission to use the name as part of a supergroup he was trying to put together with himself, Dreja, Jeff Beck, Keith Moon, and John Entwistle.
Rumor has it that Moon and Entwistle declined, telling Page that his band would go down like a “lead balloon.” While meant as criticism, Page and the other “New Yardbirds” took the insult as inspiration. They altered “lead” to “led” and changed “balloon” to “zeppelin creating the name “Led Zeppelin.” On October 25, 1968, the band performed their first show under the new name at the University of Surrey in Battersea, London.
Led Zeppelin IV, the band’s fourth album appeared with no official name and very little information about its contents. Instead, there were four symbols placed on the cover. Each of these were selected by one of the band mates and have grown to become symbolic of the band as a whole. Each member selected their symbol for a different reason:
“The Battle of Evermore” is inspired by The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkein. The song was released as a Celtic folk duet with Robert Plant and Sandy Denny. To thank her for her participation, Denny also has her own Led Zeppelin IV symbol featured as an asterik after “The Battle of Evermore” on the inner sleeve of the album. The symbol, which includes three upside down triangles stacked triangularly (two on the bottom and one centerrd atop), is thought to be a Christian symbol for the Godhead.
In 1980, John Bonham died after drinking heavily. After his death, the American tour was canceled and the band released a statement announcing the dissolution of the band stating that they couldn't continue without a founding member.
Becoming Led Zeppelin is a documentary film about the origins of the band and its early years. It premiered in 2021 at the Venice Film Festival. You can watch it on digitbinge or buy it at retail stores.
