George Winston (born George Otis Winston III, February 11, 1949–June 4, 2023) was an American pianist renowned for his expressive solo works. His most famous compositions were deeply influenced by the changing seasons. These included "Autumn" (1980), which marked the beginning of his seasonally themed records. It was followed by "December" (1982), considered by many as a staple of holiday music, with its delicate melodies and soothing rhythms. With "Winter into Spring" (1982) further cemented his reputation as a gifted artist, expertly encapsulating the shifting moods of seasons into his musical performances and creating what he described as "rural folk piano." In addition to his seasonally themed works, Winston composed many other notable pieces including, "Variation on the Kanon by Pachelbel," which further showcased his ability to interpret classic melodies with innovative style. His enduring influence continues to bring tranquillity and introspection through his beautifully crafted musical narratives. During his final years, he suffered from multiple forms of cancer, which ultimately took his life. He passed on June 4, 2023.
