Frans is geboren in 1946 en groeide op in de Maastrichtse wijk Limmel. Op acht-jarige leeftijd verdeelde hij zijn tijd tussen voetballen en trommelen bij de drumband van harmonie De Gele Rijders. "Eigenlijk wilde ik beroepsvoetballer worden. Ik bracht het tot het tweede elftal van MVV (us MVV'ke), maar koos 21 jaar oud voor de muziek."
