A native of Queens, New York, Kara Lu began putting music on the internet as Father Koi in 2019 with her hit single "Halloween Dancer." "I'm a big haired disco kid, when you gonna ask me to dance with me?—" she sings, and her lyrical yet poignant sounds transport the listener to a scene featuring nostalgic old-fashioned roller rink. Like swimming through one’s thoughts, her sounds bring about dreamy reality through eidetic lyrics and ’60s-esque backing harmonies.
