"Dumb Luck" was made up of The Used members Quinn Allman and Jeph Howard, ex Used member Branden Steineckert and Ashton Johnson. Jeph sang lead vocals in the Dumb Luck however, he found that lead vocals were very difficult for him and went back to playing bass guitar. The three of them began searching for a new singer. Remembering Bert McCracken from their shows, they asked him to audition. This is when they changed their name to Used, and later The Used after a Boston band was found to have the same name.
