For Brick Layer Cake, Trainer plays every instrument, and sings in a deep speech-like monotone. The music of Brick Layer Cake is characteristically very slow in tempo, to the point of being called "drone-like". As Steve Albini described it: 'Think of Nick Drake on downers fronting Black Sabbath, if Black Sabbath played only the good parts of their songs'.
