Over Bart iets in het kort schrijven is geen gemakkelijke opgave. Als student aan de Studio Herman Teirlinck in Antwerpen leerde Bart heel wat uit het "vak", maar de eerste echte ervaring kreeg hij dankzij Luc Appermont in diens kustshows. In 1982 werd Bart gecontacteerd voor deelname aan de Baccara-beker, waar hij als totaal onbekend individu de publieksprijs in ontvangst mocht nemen. In 1983 nam hij een eerste maal deel aan de preselectie van Eurosong en werd derde met "Symphonie".
