He was inspired to become a musician by his country artist father, Rhett Akins. Continuing his father’s legacy, Rhett dropped his debut album "It Goes Like This" in 2013. It featured the chart-topping single "Make Me Wanna." His second album “Tangled Up” (2015) featured “Die a Happy Man,” his first number one on the US Country Songs chart. During this journey, his wife, Lauren Akins, whom he married in 2012, often serves as his muse.
