89X Birthday Bash Jul 16, 2010 (14 years ago) The Fillmore Detroit Detroit, Michigan, United States
When i first heard about this concert, I knew i had to be there, and i had to be as close as possible to the front. Sublime is my favorite band, and this was the first opportunity Detroit would have to witness the rekindled band with new singer Rome. When i first heard news that the original members were playing with Rome, i did some research and determined not only was he incredibly talented, but also a perfect fit to carry on Brad Nowell's legacy. I went to this show with my girlfriend at the time, my sister and her friend. I remember going downtown and getting inline at 3pm. We were third inline and had a long wait. The next to arrive in line were a couple. They were fun to hangout with and the girl, Beth, even brought coloring books.
Once we finally got in the doors, we made a mad dash and secured a front row spot against the barricades. Civil Twilight kicked off the show and had a great sound, that i would become a bigger fan of years later. Neon Trees brought an unrivaled energy to the venue and i even caught a guitar pick. Paper Tongues picked up where Neon Trees left off and kept the party going with a few fun hit songs.
The Dirty Heads became a favorite of mine instantly after hearing "Lay Me Down" on the radio, featuring Rome from Sublime, and after diving into there first full album, i was anxious to hear them play live for the first time. As i had hoped, they were incredible and even brought Rome out early to sing "Lay Me Down" with them. Their mix of sublime style reggae and Beastie Boy style hip hop had me hooked.
When Sublime with Rome finally took the stage, the atmosphere was already wild. Dirty Heads succeeded in amplifying the party, and unfortunately some people just can't handle it. Being front row up against the barricades proved to be a challenging task as our group often had to fight off being crushed against it. Despite the rowdy crowd, Sublime with Rome was a joy to behold. They played classic Sublime songs that i never thought i would get a chance to hear live. We enjoyed about half of their set before the crowd became too much. We ended up hopping the guard rail to save the ladies from a miserable time, which ended up working out ok because we were able to actually enjoy the music from farther back and the music was all that mattered to me. It was an amazing concert to behold and really jumpstarted my need to experience as much live music as i could swing, and as soon as possible
