No man, they did not stop playing freebird the night I was there
I was there... I remember crowded, but those pics show PACKED !!! Wow... I took my girlfriends ticket, turned it around so when the tore the tickets together, I had right & left halves... See picture below... Richard, Escondido, Ca.
And Black Sabbath and Van Halen were not there . It was not a 2 day event , 5 bands were enough, Foreigner and REO both played every song off their albums and Skynard played for well over 2 hrs .
Bannerman , yes , I remember the guy dropping into the crowd . I didn’t see what happened to him though. Sky divers were a big thing at most concert venues in the 70s , I’m not sure how it got started or why , but hot air balloon were popular too .
This was one of the most memorable shows of my teen years. I was 14 years old and my sister was 13 . Dad dropped us off . I missed seeing Rex because i passed out from heat stroke ( hottest day of the month, 100% at 8:30 am ! ) while waiting in the broiling sun like everyone else in line for 5 hours. The guy in front of us passed out and cut his stomach open on his wine bottle . I went down next . Woke up inside the venue in a first aid center . My sister excitedly told me that we were in the stadium and I was taken in on a stretcher and everyone else was still outside in line ! As soon as I was cleared by a medical aid and my dad was notified we got to go run for the stage ( like we all did in the 70s ) we all paid the same amount to get in and the fastest runners got the closest to the stage . I don’t remember much about Rex., but REO Speedwagon was fantastic, Foreigner was mind blowing for their first tour on a debut album released 5 months prior, I got their album the next day ., Nugent was great but only played 3 songs and Skynard … Jesus they were on fire as the sun set and the moon came up ! They played all their biggest hits and 2 songs off their upcoming album for us that no one else had heard and play an epic 45 minute version of FreeBird as a finale, I had seen them twice before and they were just fantastic that night . It was so damn hot and they rocked harder then ever . If you any of you concert lovers don’t know this , this was one of their last shows before the plane crash that took the lives of all but their drummer , and this show that we were lucky enough to see is the last recorded video of the band ! There is a wonderful video of it on you tube under Leonard Skynyrd 1977 live at Anaheim! It is touched up a bit because it’s the last and their names are all added . Also “ we” the audience are also in the video. I am grateful to my dad for loving music and getting us tickets and grateful to have lived in an era that produced some of the best rock ever and musicians enjoyed each others music and played many venues together without issues with who got top billing and who got to headline. ♥️
I remember several things about this concert. First, it was hot as hell. When T-Rex started playing All The Young Dudes" I got goose bumps, and still thinks it's one of the best renditions of any song I have ever heard in concert. When Nugent shot that arrow accross the stage it was awesome! Last but not least, I saw an old high school, and fellow musician friend from Missouri there. We were both only 19-20 years old. I was there because I was in the Marine Corp, stationed at 29 Palms and he was there touring with a band. How crazy was thet?
Remember the skydivers and the one guy landing in the crowd? He missed the infield.
I wish I can remember those things. The only time I recall an issue with the stadium heaving was during the Beach Boys, July 3rd 1976. Sadly, I think the sun and half pints in cracker boxes muddled memories. I do have memories of skydivers making a circle at a concert but I think over the years have blurred the extra things to any concert instead of the specific one. Thanks for confirming my memory that the plane crash wasn't long after. So glad I can say I saw them.
Yes,hoagie, I remember all that also. It was such a special time being there. I am a native of the Philadelphia area. I was in the Marine Corps in those days and got to see a lot of concerts out in the West. This show was great. REO Speedwagon was breaking out, Foreigner was brand new, Ted and Skynyrd were on top of their game. I did remember Ron Nix and the freefall circle. I was on the field trying to get a better view. That was my 4th time seeing the original Skynyrd line up. 2 months later working the flight line in Yuma, it came across the radio about the tragic plane crash.
2 things nobody has commented on: Ron Nix? jumped off a tower into cardboard boxes (new Guiness record) people jumping from airplane and doing freefall circle, people stomping up and down during Freebird, stadium was heaving so bad they stopped song? Does anyone else remember that?
Was pretty young back then. We won tickets from TenQ radio. I won a crap load of stuff from that radio station back then. The concert was great. TenQ through in a bunch of albums of these bands too. Nugent was my favorite back then. That band was tight. REO was great too. That's when they could rock. Was pretty happy I got see one of Lynyrd Skynyrds final shows. Only bummer was, we missed the TenQ bus for the ride home. We were confused where the pickup was. We wondered all over trying to find a phone to call my dad. He was pissed.
I was there and the first band was Rex ( fronted by Rex Smith) not T-Rex. Lynyrd Skynyrd was pretty sloppy as Van Zant was guzzling JD and was absolutely hammered by the end of the set.
Yea had to dodge a 300 lb mouse on way home -- bought street survivors album soon after then and then they were gone
I also had trouble finding my car. How did I even make it home? Wow!
All I remember I was so high i couldn't find my ride... got a ride from some guy in a van... surprised I didn't get killed...oh and GREAT CONCERT
Plenty High
I know , maybe they're thinking of a different show. We were all pretty high
BLACK SABBATH AND VAN HALEN WERE NOT THERE!!
Black Sabbath and Van Halen were also there.
