Peter Frampton Finale - The Farewell Tour Oct 12, 2019 (5 years ago) Concord Pavilion Concord, California, United States
Getting to the Concord Pavilion is always way more difficult than it should be, if you have to drive, which almost everyone does because it’s out in the middle of nowhere. But, we eschewed the parking cop’s directions and snagged the next to last spot on a dirt berm with a 45 degree angle. In a Honda Civic. The concert was worth every bit of the struggle. Bonham’s Led Zep group was a good pairing with Frampton, as most of us old fogies that made up the crowd grew up on both. There’s something to be said for a more mature crowd. Fewer “woo girls” and wasted people. Although, there was a teenage-ish girl there with someone who looked like her mother who dragged her there to have a mother-daughter bonding moment. The mom had her arm around the girl, who was bent over, vomiting. Ah, youth. But, I digress.
The show was an absolute joy. Mr. Frampton was as charming and engaging as ever, as well as the kind of thoughtful and poignant you only become with time. He said he wants to go out on top, and man is he ever. The cameras were, quite rightly, unobtrusive and almost always at least one of the three was trained on Frampton’s hands as he played to a thousand jaws hanging open to various degrees. It was a genuine privilege to be “in the room,” as they say, while he brought so many immortal songs to life in front of all of us. Besides the expected, and happily received, Frampton Comes Alive hits, there were lots of gems from his catalog of work over the years with bands and on his own. What touched me the most, besides his obvious utter delight to be playing to so many people singing along, were his interpretations of other people’s songs. Not just covers, but also collaborations. Specifically, his story about working with Chris Cornell and then his performance of Black Hole Sun, created a simply amazing experience. TL/dr: One of the purest moments of the arc we travel with the musicians who inform our lives that I have had the honor to experience. And, somehow, I got my car out of the dirt.
