Notes:

The day after Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, The Jimi Hendrix Experience was scheduled to play the Symphony Hall in Newark, New Jersey. I took a bus into Newark and the streets there were empty. I remember that the venue was mostly empty as well, and Hendrix immediately prompted everyone there to fill the front rows. After playing one improvisation that he dedicated to the slain activist, Hendrix left the stage. He later jammed with Buddy Guy at Generation in New York City. The next day, riots broke out in Newark.
