A Cool Sound From Hell Jan 5, 2020 (5 years ago) Paradise Theatre Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Live jazz pre-show performance and post-film Q&A.
Director Sidney J. Furie’s (The Ipcress File, Iron Eagle) striking portrait of hipster Toronto in the 1950s was thought to be lost forever, before being uncovered in the archives of the British Film Institute in 2013. Furie’s camera follows a disillusioned youth named Charlie (Anthony Ray, son of Nicholas Ray) as he descends through Toronto’s beatnik scene into a drug-addled world of jazz and all-night parties. But after a drug deal at Union Station goes wrong, Charlie must decide who his friends really are.
Curated by Jazz FM’s Jaymz Bee, and inspired by the film’s Phil Nimmons score, The Great Bob Scott Quartet performed lively variations of film scores before the film.
TIFF Senior Programmer, Steve Gravestock, led a Skype Q&A with director Sidney J. Furie following the film.
Bebop, Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, Jazz, Neo Mellow, Acoustic Pop, Background Jazz, Alternative Americana, and Jazz Quartet.
