Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Lee got a serious wake-up call. During his first day for a new job at UCLA, he collapsed. But it wasn’t a case of opening-day jitters: His nerves were fine. His heart, on the other hand, wasn’t. Months later, doctors diagnosed him with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, a heart condition where patients have an extra connection in the heart, causing tachycardia and fainting. He gambled on a tricky heart surgery that had a 50-50 chance of correcting the problem.
